Donald MacMillan was born in Butte, Montana, on February 17, 1932, the son of Leonard and Margaret MacMillan. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He received a PhD in history from the University of Montana, and served on the faculty there for many years. He died in Helena of Lou Gehrig's Disease on November 18, 1996.

Took up residence at Bowen, and was Chief Draftsman for the Engineer of Roads, Northern District, 1864-1865. Superintendent of Works for the Kennedy District, later Roads Surveyor of the Northern District (of Queensland).
